Keeyask Dam Expense Details Please

  • CTF discovers over $39-million spent on "process costs"
  • CTF calls for full disclosure before Jan. 29 referendum

Winnipeg: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) released documents obtained through a Freedom Of Information (FOI) request today which showed over $39-million has been spent on 'negotiations' between "Cree Nation Partners" (Tataskweyak Cree Nation and War Lake) and Manitoba Hydro for the Keeyask dam project.

The CTF received allegations of misspending and is calling for the release of the expense details prior to the band's January 29 referendum on the Keeyask dam.

“Hydro development such as this project should be a great story for aboriginal communities” stated CTF-director, Colin Craig. “Unfortunately, the CTF has received allegations of misspending during the planning stage of this project.  Hopefully the expense details will be released to the public so that everyone can see how these funds were used.  This should happen before band members vote on the project on January 29.”

At least one member from the Tataskweyak Cree Nation informed the CTF that the details are not being disclosed to band residents.  The CTF hopes the federal department of Indian and Northern Affairs will step in and ensure there is transparency in this process.

“Department of Indian and Northern Affairs officials should step in and make sure there is transparency with this project.” said Craig.  "These details should be released to the public."
